Ecocamp at Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center

Experience community. Connect with nature. Find joy.

Since 1972, Ecocamp has provided countless opportunities for campers to experience the beauty of Glen Helen Nature Preserve up close, while creating a safe space for them to build community, connect with friends - old and new - and gain new skills as they build self-confidence.

After careful consideration, we are happy to announce that we are offering Ecocamp for summer 2022! We are taking careful COVID-19 precautions into consideration, and we will safely be offering both day and overnight options. Thank you and we look forward to seeing your camper at Ecocamp 2022!

Camp Descriptions

Day Camps

Day camps run Monday through Friday, drop-off 8:45-9:00am to 3:30-3:45 pm pick-up. Extended daily hours are available for $25 per week, with a 5:30 pick up time. $230 / week, ages 5-6, 6-8, and 9-11.

Dig It

We’ll spend the week down-low and up-close, discovering all the creepy crawly critters that make the soil their home. Leave no log unturned! And maybe feed your naturalist a mud pie?!  Can you dig it?

Forest Friends

Get ready to behave like a different Glen Helen animal each day!  We’ll move through the woods and use all our senses just like the creatures do. Hunt for toads, seek the slugs, and dance like a salamander.

NART

Nature + Art = NART!  The beauty of Glen Helen will provide inspiration, campers must bring their imaginations! Our artists will sculpt mud, weave leaves, make messes, and create nature inspired art projects to share back home.

Puddle Jumpers

Explore the Glen’s pond and streams in search of the amazing creatures that call them home. Campers will participate in all sorts of water-themed crafts and games. Come ready for a wet week - no puddle will go un-splashed!

Story Tellers

We will use some of our favorite stories to inspire our exploration of the Glen this week. Each day we’ll find connections between a popular picture book and the natural environment. Then we will get creative and write our own story about our week at Glen Helen!

Water Wander

Water flows through and around everyone of us - we cannot live without it! Spend a week immersed in this delightful, precious resource. We will look for it in hidden places, conduct a stream study to learn more about the creatures that call our streams and ponds home, learn about how water shapes the landscapes around us.

Whimsy

Are you up for a little fairy tale fun? Using whimsical tales of mythical creatures as our inspiration, we will explore the Glen’s most magical spots. Plan to make your own wings and use sticks, mud, leaves and more to build gnome homes and fairy forts!

Progressive Camps

Progressive campers will spend the night in our dorms on Thursday evening.  Drop-off 8:45-9:00 am (Monday - Thursday) and pick-up 5:30 pm (Monday-Wednesday) and Friday pick-up at 3:30.  Extended care is available on Friday until 5:30 with an additional fee of $10. Ages 7-9, $275 / week.

Ancient Arti-Crafts

How did our ancestors live on the land? They made everything they needed from rocks, wood, plants, and animals. Arti-crafters will travel back in time to explore these ancient practices. They will learn primitive skills like rope making and shelter building, while creating their own art and crafts with natural materials.

Fort-topia

Humans aren’t the only critters that build houses! Explore all the amazing ways that animals and insects create shelter for themselves and their families. And as we learn about design from other creatures, we’ll put our knowledge to use by building our own shelters and forts.

Grossology

From slug slime to vomiting vultures, this week you will take a look at the slimy, sticky, gooey, gross side of nature! Grossologists will explore many different adaptations that may seem weird, but help creatures survive in the wild. Plan on a messy week as we take on all sorts of adventures!

Nature Detectives

There are many secrets hidden in our forests, meadows, and streams. As a nature detective, you will comb the Glen looking for tracks, scat, hidey holes, and teeth marks. Each day will bring a new mystery and put you hot on the trail of one of the many animals that call Glen Helen home.

Overnight Camps

Overnight camps run Monday through Friday, drop-off on Monday between 9:15-10:00 am. Pick-up on Friday is 3:30pm with extended care until 5:30 on Friday available for $10. $350-$415 / week, depending on the camp. Ages 8-11, 11-13, 12-14, 13-15, and 14-16.

Artful Retreat ($415) (Ages 12-14 and 14-16)

The Balinese say:“We have no Art. Everything we do is Art.” You don’t need to be an artist to learn to see the world with an artist’s eye and create it with an artist’s hand. We’ll have some special guest teachers to share skills of painting, sculpture, photography, and music as we awake to the beauty around us in every moment.

EcoEngineers  ($385) (Ages 11-13)

Do you like to create, build, and experiment? Spend the week searching for inspiration from nature’s engineers, ants, bees, birds, and plants, all while experimenting with designs of your own! Test out different materials to create things that blend in, provide shelter, float, or soar at the Glen.

Fort-topia  ($350) (Ages 8-11)

Humans aren’t the only critters that build houses! Explore all the amazing ways that animals and insects create shelter for themselves and their families. And as we learn about design from other creatures, we’ll put our knowledge to use by building our own shelters and forts.

Girls in the Outdoors!  ($350) (Ages 8-11 and 11-13)

We’ll spend the week hiking, canoeing and building our basic outdoor skills. Meet women in leadership positions in the science field. Play and explore science and art in the Glen. Make new friends and discover something new about yourself!

NART  ($350) (Ages 8-11 and 11-13)

Nature + Art = NART!  The beauty of Glen Helen will provide inspiration - campers must bring their imaginations! Our artists will sculpt mud, weave leaves, make messes, and create nature inspired art projects to share back home.

Nature Detectives  ($350) (Ages 8-11)

There are many secrets hidden in the Glen’s forests, meadows and streams. As a nature detective, you will comb the forest looking for tracks, scat, holes and teeth marks. Each day will bring a new mystery and put your hot on the trail of one of the Glen’s many animals.

Nocturnal Camp  ($415) (Ages 12-14, 13-15, and 14-16)

An Ecocamp tradition! A descent into the nocturnal world of the night! See everything through new eyes and ears for a renewed understanding of the Glen and of yourself. In the dark we appreciate the light in new ways, realizing the importance of community, trust, and friendship.

Raptor Camp  ($415) (Ages 11-13 and 12-14)

Spend the week learning with the staff of the Glen Helen Raptor Center.  Learn from and care for our educational ambassadors while you get to know hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls up close and personal!

Rock Stars  ($350) (Ages 8-11)

Let’s rock out on rocks! Skip ‘em, build with ‘em, stack ‘em, see who’s living under ‘em, roll ‘em down hill, use ‘em for tools like our ancestors did. Includes a field trip to Caesar’s Creek Park to collect your very own fossils.

Survivor Challenge  ($415) (Ages 11-13, 12-14, 13-15, and 14-16)

How many ways do you know to start a fire? Can you build a shelter to weather out a storm?  Have you ever cooked a meal using the power of the sun? Take your survival skills to the next level and test your strength and creativity as you take on a variety of challenges as a team. Do you have what it takes? Be ready for adventure!
